What you can learn:  Keep pursuing fresh ideas and share your vision. Mycoskie has shared his vision of a future of social minded consumers and customers. Jord Poster- Helped to found Tickets for Charity They ask companies to donate tickets for resale with part of the proceeds going to 100 different charities. By 2012 Ticket for Charity had raised around $10 million. What you can learn?  Seek and untapped market and be patient when it comes to profit. Tickets for Charity had noticed that 30-70% of tickets that corporations buy for sports games and concerts go unused each year, so the decided to do something about it. Sergey Brin and Larry Page Co-founded Google They co-founded Google from a friends garage, which is now one of the worlds biggest global tech companies. Google now has over 57,000 employees. What can we learn?  Start new projects with conviction and be prepared for the long haul. The Google X Division is all about futuristics projects, such as self-driving cars. Kevin Plank Founded Under Armour Plank started his startup in his grandmas basement, selling his sports  clothing  from his car. By 2010 Under Armour received an annual revenue of $1 billion. What can we learn? Support the next generation of entrepreneurs and your community. Under Armour have a Give Back initiative supporting the unserved communities of Baltimore. Jeff Bezos -Founder of Amazon Jeff left his 6 figure  Wall Street pay check to open Amazon in 1994. Amazon now has a revenue of over $100 billion. What can we learn? How To Start A Career In Saving Animals Working with animals can be a fun career, it can also sometimes be a sad career. There are so many options in the field, from boarding dogs to selling retail products for animals and their owners.  For the right person, a career in saving animals can be very rewarding. No matter what field you chose, you can know that you will be working in a rewarding career. Finding homes for adoptable animals feels amazing, just as it does to save some ducklings after their mom has been hit and killed by a car. It’s also sad when elderly animals pass or you find hoarding cases with all kinds of animals. Veterinary Care  Veterinary care is a career that has its ups and downs when it comes to the happiness and reward. Saving someone’s pet can be extremely rewarding, while not being able to save a dog that has been hit by a car can be crushing. However, you can feel rewarded for trying to save that pet. If you want to get into veterinary care you need to go to school and you’ll learn a lot of things similar to people that go to school to be doctors, except you’ll be learning the anatomy and physiology of many species of animals instead of humans.  Rescue  Running or working at a rescue can be an amazing experience. If you work in a no-kill shelter you know that the animals that are there will at least live out their lives forever, whether or not they find a forever home. Other types of shelters can have some pretty depressing moments, but it’s still a rewarding career.  Boarding  Boarding kennels are a great way to spend your time with animals, most often dogs and cats, without needing to find them home, treat their illnesses, or have them be your own actual pet. Plus, you have a couple options; you can run a doggy daycare or have an actual boarding facility. You need licensing and the right size property, plus cages and runs for the dogs to run this type of business. You will need to be good to people’s pets or they won’t want to pay you to watch their dogs and cats again, and that’s not good for your business.  Training  Training dogs can be a fun career. You can do general training or obedience training. You could be the trainer for a show dog or an agility dog. Those can be really fun but may take some kind of certification.  Retail  If you don’t want to work directly with dogs and cats, but you like to help people that love their animals of all sizes, you could run a retail pet business. There are franchises or you could go it your own. Sell foods, pet clothing, treats, toys, cages and more. You could also sell fish and small animals and maybe let a local shelter come in once a month with adoptable cats and dogs.

The Optimism Bias

The Optimism Bias I lost a dollar bet yesterday.   I bet my mom that the Jacksonville Jaguars would win the game, and they lost.   (The good thing about this football season is that, no matter what week you read this post, the first sentence will most likely still be true.) This is the fourth week I’ve taken the Jags to win, and the fourth week I’ve lost.   Yet, on Friday, when my (shark) mom asks me what I want, I’m almost sure to take the Jags for the win.   As it turns out, I’m not alone. Tali Sharot  write The Optimism Bias, a book on why humans almost always view the future as hopeful and sunny.   She has studied hundreds of subjects, young and old, and found that no matter the odds, we always believe that tomorrow will be better. We’re apparently hard wired that way.   “We hugely underestimate the likelihood of divorce, cancer and unemployment,” she writes.   “”We expect to be healthier than the average person and more successful than [our] peers.” Sharot goes on to ask her readers to rate themselves in the following characteristics: Getting along well with others Leadership ability Logical thinking Driving ability Go ahead â€" rate yourself.   Are you in the lower 25% of the U.S. population? The 25th -50th quartile?   The 50th â€" 75th quartile?   Or are you in the top 25%? A 1970’s survey found that 85 percent of people rated themselves above average in getting along with people.     My own experience reveals that roughly 100 percent of drivers rate themselves as above average. We know that that’s impossible.   The Bell curve (aka Normal Distribution) teaches us that 50 percent of us, are, by definition, average.   Yet we persist in rating ourselves higher than average.   Interestingly, while we can’t identify our own biases, we’re excellent in perceiving them in someone else.   That sentence alone explains a lot of woe in the human condition.   But that’s another post. The bias in rating ourselves as above average may explain why we take rejection so personally when were in a job search.   Its not just losing the opportunity; were confused and saddened by the companys inability to recognize standout talent when they see it. Another trick our brain plays on us is called “choice blindness blindness.”   Sharot describes this as the phenomenon wherein we think we’re making a rational choice, but really can’t tell the difference.   In one supermarket taste test, for instance, shoppers were asked to choose the jam they preferred â€" was it the blue jar or the red jar?   Shoppers made the choice, then were given the opportunity to taste their choice again and describe why they liked it.   What they didn’t know was that the testers had substituted the jam they didn’t choose for the winner.   Almost none of the shoppers were able to recognize the swap; they happily gave several reasons why this jam was superior to the one they’d rejected.     Of course, they were actually describing the rejected jam as they said things like “this one is less obviously sweet.” Sharot’s point is that we may be wasting a lot of time carefully justifying choices.   When people were asked to rationalize the reasons they chose a specific art poster for their home, they scored lower in satisfaction months later than people who’d made a quick, unthinking choice.   In other words, you may think you have great, well thought out reasons for taking a job or deciding on a course of action.   The truth is, you might be better off sometimes to flip a coin. Why is more thinking less helpful?   It may be because we focus on things we can articulate, instead of what will matter more in the long run, but be harder to understand or say.   Whatever the reasons, our bias toward thinking we’re smart is hard to overcome. Meanwhile, I’ve studied the stats against our upcoming opponents, and I’m taking the Jags to win by three.   Can I borrow a dollar?
